HISPANIC ADVOCACY GROUP TO LAUNCH
FACT-FINDING INVESTIGATION OF HOSPITAL CARE THAT ENDED WITH QUADRUPLE AMPUTATION
Group Asks Claudia Mejia’s Lawyers to Release Medical Records and Give Orlando
Regional Medical Center Written Authorization to Discuss Mejia’s Treatment and
Hospital Care
ORLANDO, FL—Consejo de Latinos Unidos, the national non-profit organization that
educates and assists Hispanics and others about health care issues, announced
today that it has launched an independent, fact finding investigation of the
hospital care given to Claudia Mejia—the woman who gave birth and then had to
have all four limbs amputated after being diagnosed with a flesh-eating
bacteria—in hopes of making sure the interests of the Hispanic community and
public at large are served.
In a letter to Mejia’s lawyers, K.B. Forbes, the Executive Director of the
Consejo, wrote, “Like many people, we were recently stunned by the news stories
about Claudia Mejia. We have decided to conduct an independent, fact-finding
investigation. We feel the Hispanic community deserves thorough and complete
answers.”
The letter, addressed to Mejia’s lawyers E. Clay Parker of Orlando and Judy
Hyman of West Palm Beach, specifically requests their cooperation and states the
Consejo’s investigation “would be helped if your client, Ms. Mejia, would give
Orlando Regional Medical Center permission, under HIPAA guidelines, to discuss
her medical situation and what specifically happened to her and what treatment
she received.”
Furthermore, the group asks Mejia’s lawyers for copies of her medical records,
writing, “We are told that Orlando Regional has provided your client with a
complete and true copy of her medical records. We would like to have them
reviewed independently. Can you provide us with a copy?”
The group is awaiting a formal reply from Hyman or Parker to their requests.
Orlando Regional Medical Center is barred from discussing the case until they
receive such authorization.
Two weeks ago, the Consejo was able to revolve a crisis of miscommunication
between Ruby Cintron, the young mother shot in the eye on New Year’s Eve, and
Orlando Regional Medical Center.
